The latest transmission from Eddie Merced’s prolific studio output takes us further into his vision of techno as a vessel for mystery and intrigue. Rejecting the widespread focus on harsh nihilism or monotonous functionality, he continues to emphasise bold sweeps of melody loaded with emotional weight which mark out his music as an essential continuation of the machine soul tradition first pioneered in Detroit in the 80s.

‘Dark Skies’ opens this latest release on an uplifting, invigorating pairing of epic synth blooms with infectious drum machine rhythms. Teasing intricate beat patterns and squelchy bass underneath the soaring chord progressions, it’s a dreamy cut with plenty of energy where it counts.

‘One Of Those Days’ locks into a more house-oriented groove, but here the pads take on a more elusive tone which, paired with the subtle sci-fi arp pulses, feeds into the mystery Merced loves to tease in his music. Hold tight for the chord change though, as the track makes a pointed emotional shift towards the light in a standout moment from the EP.

‘Lunar Prowler’ tempers the energy of the release with minimal percussion and swirling ambience which perfectly evokes the celestial technology the title nods to. Where the other two tracks favoured a fulsome, rich experience, this is an exercise in subtlety which widens the reach of Merced’s expanding catalogue in superlative style.
